Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Marvel had to make a deal with Fox to use Ego the Living Planet

In order to get Ego the Living Planet into Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Marvel had to swap characters with 20th Century Fox.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 isn't too far away now. James Gunn's much-anticipated sequel will feature Kurt Russell as Ego the Living Planet, who will also be Peter Quill's father. We are huge fans of Kurt Russell here at melty, so naturally this news pleased us greatly. However, apparently Marvel had to go to great length so that James Gunn could get to use the character in his movie. Ego was actually owned by 20th Century Fox, and the two studios had to come to a special agreement so that the living planet could appear in Guardians Vol. 2. Check out what that agreement was below.

According to The Playlist, Deadpool's writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, really liked the name Negasonic Teenage Warhead, but they weren't too keen on her powers. So, in order to have them changed Fox had to get the OK from Marvel, and in exchange Fox gave them the rights to use Ego the Living Planet in Guardians Vol. 2. “Kurt Russell [‘s Ego the Living Planet] in the new ‘Guardians’ movie was the character that Fox swapped with Marvel to [change] Negasonic Teenage Warhead powers,” revealed Wernick. So in many respects, it's thanks to Fox that we're going to see Kurt Russell as Ego in the Guardians sequel.
