Could Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode 8 see Rey go down the path to the Dark Side and Kylo Ren emerge as the hero? It's speculation time!
WARNING: This article is purely speculation, but may contain accidental SPOILERS.
So we've all seen Star Wars: Episode 7 - The Force Awakens by now, and if you haven't, then what on Earth are you doing? Go away and watch it now! Then come back and read this article. So, the question on everybody's lips is, who is Rey? We want to know where she came from, who her parents were, or are. We recently reported on a rumour suggesting that Rey could be related to Emperor Palpatine. We're already pretty certain that she won't end up being Luke Skywalker's daughter, mainly because that's way too easy, would be a bit disappointing and J.J. Abrams said that we didn't see Rey's parents in Episode 7. But he said nothing about the characters from the other Star Wars movies being related to Rey, *cough* Darth Sidious *cough*.
Another interesting story arc is that of Kylo Ren. We still don't really know how he was seduced to the Darth Side by Supreme Leader Snoke, and there are still some question marks surrounding his real motives. There's been an interesting theory put forward suggesting that he is in fact a double agent, and has gone over to the Darth Side to destroy it from within. That would be a cool twist. Reddit user abraxadabra quite liked this idea and developed on it in their post. "Think about it, episode 8 lays the groundwork or has the craziest twist ever at the end, with both characters switching sides and culminating in a rematch in episode IX between Kylo and Rey, but now fighting for the other side."
This is an fascinating idea and would certainly play with our preconceptions of how this new Star Wars trilogy will end. We've all automatically assumed that Rey is the goodie and Kylo is the baddie. But what if we were wrong? What if the roles were reversed? Rian Johnson is exactly the sort of director to toy with us like this, and as abraxadabra wrote in their post, "I think it would be out of left field and kinda original (there's nothing new under the sun, but things can be fresh) as far as hero vs villain character arcs."
The evidence is already there in The Force Awakens. Kylo's battle between the Dark and the Light is plain for all to see. Yet Rey's also going through a tough time of it. You can tell that she takes great pleasure in beating Kylo during their duel, and as the Emperor Palpatine being her grandfather theory made pretty clear, she fights an awful lot like the Sith Lord. Anyway, as we mentioned before, this is pure speculation and we won't know the truth until Episode 8 comes out on December 15th, 2017.
